Message outline
Pastor Jon Burdine · Wednesday Night Service · October 21, 2026 Introduction: Listen when God speaks Saul of Tarsus was traveling toward Damascus, determined to oppose the followers of Jesus. He believed he was doing the right thing, but a light from heaven and the voice of Christ stopped him in his tracks. God had a different purpose for his life. Just as an announcement or a knock at the door calls for our attention, God speaks to draw a response from us. This message challenges believers to recognize His voice and answer His call to service, sanctification, and salvation.
Read Acts 9:1–5 in the KJV- 01
God Gets Our Attention for Service
- Saul’s dedication was being directed against the church. When Christ confronted him, his life was redirected toward serving the very Lord he had opposed.
- God has something for each of us to do. Our past, limitations, or feelings of inadequacy do not place us beyond His ability to use us.
- Pastor Jon recalls reconsidering his future while recovering from a broken leg. That interruption became an opportunity to respond to God’s direction and attend Bible school.
- Jonah’s experience shows the danger of resisting God’s assignment. After the storm and the great fish, he obeyed, preached to Nineveh, and witnessed the people’s repentance.
- Service is not limited to preaching. A kind word, a personal testimony, sharing the gospel, or directing someone to a helpful message can reach a person who needs Christ.
- Someone else may be waiting on our obedience. Instead of focusing on what we cannot do, surrender what we have and allow God to work through us.
Scriptures: Acts 9:1–5; Jonah 1:1–17; Jonah 3:1–10; Jude 1:23.

God Gets Our Attention for Sanctification
- Moses was tending sheep when the burning bush caught his attention. When he turned aside, God called him by name and told him to remove his shoes because he stood on holy ground.
- God was setting Moses apart for His purpose. Sanctification calls us beyond ordinary routines into a life surrendered to the Lord.
- When God deals with something that hinders our walk with Him, we must be willing to lay it aside. Feeling inadequate does not excuse us from responding.
- Pastor Jon compares dismissing conviction to automatically rejecting a spam call. We must not become so accustomed to ignoring God’s voice that we no longer listen.
- His testimony about removing a championship ring during worship illustrates responding to personal conviction instead of finding reasons to resist.
- He also challenges parents to build distinctly Christian homes, specifically urging them to put away television, movies, and streaming entertainment. His emphasis is that holiness should shape our conduct, priorities, and home life.
Scriptures: Exodus 3:1–10; 2 Corinthians 6:17.

God Gets Our Attention for Salvation
- Jesus describes Himself as standing at the door and knocking. His voice calls for a personal response: hearing Him and opening the door.
- Familiarity with church does not remove the need to surrender to Christ. Even in a regular Wednesday-night congregation, someone may need to answer His call to salvation.
- The Lord draws and convicts, but He does not force a person to respond. We must willingly open our hearts and yield our lives to Him.
- Pastor Jon encourages those praying for loved ones not to lose hope. God can continue speaking and bringing reminders of His truth into their lives.
- Saul’s encounter warns against resisting the Lord. It is better to answer His voice promptly than continually push past His dealings.
Scriptures: Revelation 3:20; Acts 9:4–5.
Closing Challenge
What is God trying to get your attention about? Is there a work He wants you to do, something He wants you to surrender, or a call to salvation you have been putting off?
Ask Him to keep your heart tender. Do not become calloused to conviction or wait for a greater interruption before responding. Come before Him in prayer with a willing, submissive spirit.
Answer His call to service, sanctification, and salvation. Let your response be a sincere yes to whatever the Lord is asking of you.
