Rejecting the Criticism

This lesson continues the previous week’s discussion of rejecting ridicule, showing how God’s people must also respond to intimidation, discouragement, and fear. Review passage: Nehemiah 4:1–3.

Reject intimidating plots
- When ridicule failed to stop the work, the enemies joined together and threatened to attack.
- Nehemiah responded with both prayer and watchfulness. Trusting God did not mean neglecting practical preparation.
- Opposition should not cause us to abandon the work God has placed in our hearts. Keep trusting His Word and serving Him.

Reject discouragement
- The workers grew weary, and the remaining rubble made the task seem impossible.
- Discouragement often comes in the middle—after the excitement of beginning but before the satisfaction of finishing.
- Discouragement can spread. Do not let another person’s hopelessness extinguish your willingness to serve.
- Every faithful contribution matters. Serve according to your ability, and do not grow weary in doing good.

Reject fear
- The enemy’s threats were intended to frighten the people and bring the work to a halt.
- Nehemiah reminded them of the Lord’s greatness. Their confidence needed to rest in God, not in the size of the opposition.
- He also organized the people to defend their families and their work. Faith and responsible action belonged together.
- When God frustrated the enemy’s plans, the people returned to their work.

Closing challenge: Keep building and stay on guard
The workers continued building while remaining prepared to defend the work. In the same way, Christians must keep serving while staying spiritually watchful.
Do not allow ridicule, intimidation, discouragement, or fear to make you quit. Keep praying, encourage one another, and faithfully do what God has given you to do.
