Sunday Morning Campmeeting

Sermon

The Gambler

Bro. Carlos Burdine · October 4, 2026 Sunday Morning Campmeeting Introduction: What is your soul worth? Brother Carlos begins by praising Jesus Christ for His power to cleanse and change a sinful heart. He then asks the question Jesus placed before His hearers: What would it profit someone to gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Gambling means risking something valuable on an uncertain outcome. The message reaches beyond cards or money to something far more precious—the danger of gambling with our souls.

Read Mark 8:36–37 in the KJV
  1. 01

Your soul is too valuable to gamble away

    • Nothing this world offers can equal the value of your soul.
    • Temporary gain is not worth losing your relationship with God.
    • Examine what you are risking spiritually, not merely what you might gain materially.

    Scriptures: Mark 8:36–37.

  2. 02

Hidden sin has consequences beyond yourself

    • Achan took what God had forbidden and hid it, but his actions were not hidden from the Lord.
    • His disobedience affected his family and the people around him. Our choices can reach beyond our own lives.
    • Ananias and Sapphira also illustrate the seriousness of dishonesty before God. Deceiving people does not mean we have deceived Him.

    Scriptures: Joshua 7:19–26, Acts 5:1–11.

  3. 03

Give God what belongs to Him

    • Do not withhold what belongs to God while assuming you can make it right later.
    • Brother Carlos applies this warning to faithfulness in tithes and offerings, pointing to God’s promises in Malachi.
    • Trusting God should shape our decisions and the example we set for our families. Keep serving Him and bringing the next generation into His house.

    Scriptures: Malachi 3:8–12.

  4. 04

Do not overlook the Saviour while pursuing lesser things

    • At the crucifixion, men cast lots for Jesus’ garments while the Saviour hung upon the cross.
    • Their gambling becomes a sobering picture of being occupied with material things in the presence of something eternally important.
    • Money and possessions have practical uses, but no amount of wealth can replace a soul or purchase back a lost eternity.

    Scriptures: Mark 15:24, Mark 8:36–37.

Closing challenge: Stop gambling with your soul

What are you willing to exchange for your soul? No earthly possession, opportunity, or pleasure is worth losing it.

Be honest before God. Respond to the light He has given, turn to Him, and trust Him with your life. Thank Him for His mercy and for the opportunity to change your direction.

The Sure Thing: Stay with God

Bro. Darrel Meadow · October 4, 2026 Sunday Morning Campmeeting Scripture connection: Mark 8:36–37, continuing Brother Carlos’s preceding message. Introduction: Choose the sure thing Brother Meadow expresses appreciation for Shelby Street and its generations of faithful families. Responding to Brother Carlos’s message, he recalls an older preacher’s illustration about choosing “the sure thing.” His emphasis is simple: Do not gamble with your soul. Stay with God, put Him first, and respond when He deals with your heart.

  1. 01

Do not use yesterday’s experience to excuse today’s sin

    • A past profession of faith must not become permission to return to sinful living.
    • Do not risk eternity on the assumption that present disobedience does not matter.
    • Brother Meadow contrasts his former involvement in gambling with the decision to give his life to the Lord and continue serving Him.
  2. 02

Put God first and remain faithful

    • Seek a genuine experience with God: being born again, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost.
    • Remain faithful to the house of God and to the responsibilities He has given you.
    • God’s blessings should strengthen our willingness to obey. The illustration about a man struggling to tithe after his income increased warns against becoming less faithful as we receive more.
  3. 03

Respond when God deals with your heart

    • Do not ignore the conviction stirred by the preached Word.
    • Brother Meadow says he felt some should have come to pray during Brother Carlos’s message and renews that opportunity.
    • Worship God and seek Him while He is dealing with you. Hearing the warning should lead to a personal response.

Closing challenge: Take the sure thing

Do not gamble with your soul or explain away the need to obey God.

Put Him first, stay faithful, and respond when He calls you to pray. Brother Meadow’s testimony points to the choice he has made: leaving the old life behind and continuing to live for the Lord.
